Barrio La Perla (BAHR-ree-o lah PER-lah), neighborhood, NE P.R., N Old San Juan, on steep slope facing the Atlantic Ocean. Inner-city neighborhood made famous by Oscar Lewis’s “La vida.” Originally a squatter community. In spite of high unemployment and illegal drug trafficking, the community has significantly improved its living standards.
