Jane Finch (Toronto, Ontario)

Canada / Ontario / Toronto / Toronto, Ontario
 neighbourhood  Add category

An unincorporated residential and commercial neighbourhood surrounding the intersection of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West in NW Toronto. The greater neighborhood was established in 1967 after an annexed area below Finch Ave, designated Division 10, was named Jane Heights (now officially Glenfield-Jane Heights). The area above Finch was, and still remains, officially named Black Creek. The area of Jane-Finch traverses both these neigbouhoods although not entirely, and is not considered an official designation with the City of Toronto.

The abundance of high-rise apartment buildings in this area comprising 33 mid and high-rise structures, particularly along Jane Street (thus the nickname "the Jane corridor"), make it one of Toronto's most densely populated neighbourhoods, leading to an area with highest crime rates in Toronto area. There are also two discount shopping malls: the Jane-Finch and Yorkgate Malls. In the media and popular culture it is stigmatized as dangerous, however recently it has been substantially improved due largely to the work of non-profit organizations and developers.

  • Do not ever visit this area alone or at night. If you must, make sure your car doors are locked and avoid stopping at traffic lights. Be aware of massive gang violence
  • I lived here for over a year. I never had any problems myself, though I`m a rather large white male. Yes, it has crime, but it is a safe place to be in. I would sometimes walk around late at night (that`s probably the most dangerous time in terms of gun violence, but personally, I think bad drivers are a greater danger to the average person) and walked many times to and from York University after dark.
  • This place is SCARY! Don't go there at night, lock your doors, and if you MUST drive through, do it fast!
  • I've seen more violence out my window at College and Ossington than I ever saw in Jay-Eff. And it's true; one has a greater chance of being hit in a car than for being shot in the corridor. I just never like all the concrete.
  • My friend was here a few weeks ago looking to buy a car and he was offered a gun and some cigarettes from some random person
  • Jane & Finch......
  • BLOOD GANG!
  • LOL @ the comments saying not to stop at traffic lights....so are we suppose to drive through the reds? I am a SMALL 23 year old white girl, I go to this neighborhood all the time, and have friends who live here as well. It is NOT as dangerous as people say, and I swear by that. Theres a large caribbean popluation whos more communal than most neighborhoods in toronto, but i guess thats just my opinion.....
  • come to my hood and find out jnf ppl always have a lot to say
