A crescent shaped junction between the Strand, Kingsway and Waterloo Bridge, with several buildings within it. Aldwych is known for two disused tunnels: the disused Aldwych branch of the London Underground and the Kingsway Underpasses - one of which is used to carry cars at the junction.

Terminus of the Route Nos. 6 and 9, buses standing on the north side of Aldwych.

  • Aldwych takes it name from an old English term meaning Old Port, possably a port of Roman origin that was believed to exist in this area before Boudica got on her high horse and started what is generally believed to be the beginnings of the United Kingdom Imigration Service (Obviously I have no proof of this!)
  • I heard the same and search for it but did not find. I think this word of mouth is true.
  • Yes Aldwych stands for Old Trading Town in Saxon language. It is the site of the Anglo Saxon trading town of Lundenwic ("London trading town") during a period in which Lundinium was abandoned.
