The Training Field at Winthrop Square has great national and historical significance. On June 17, 1775 the Battle of Bunker Hill between the American Patriots and the British was fought on or near this green space. Set out around 1640, this roughly square, grass covered, tree shaded, monument-adorned park has served Charlestown as a farm, military drill ground, school yard, platform for political rallies, public ornament, playground and peaceful retreat within a densely built urban environment. Each segment of the square reflects the distinct phases of evolution and redevelopment. friendsofthetrainingfield.org/History.html
