Established in 1872; benefactor James Arnold (1781-1868) transferred a portion of his estate to Harvard for the arboretum's creation; located in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. The grounds were designed by Olmsted with some plantings supplied by Hicks Nurseries of Long Island.
