Used for spotting surface ships off the coast, then used to triangulate the fire from batteries firing upon enemy ships. Used telescopes and multiple levels on the tower to observe the splashing of shells into the water, then hopefully directing them onto their targets. Served Batteries Smith, 519, Herring and Hunter at Fort Miles.
