The western side of the park was the site of Pinkston Power Station, which was built in 1901 to power the city’s tram and trolleybus system. The plant was closed in the early 1960s following the withdrawal of the last trams. The plant’s massive cooling tower built on the adjacent island dominated the city skyline until its demolition in 1977.
