The largest lowland loch in Scotland and one of Scotland's finest national nature reserves. Home to the largest concentration of breeding ducks in summer and huge flocks of greylag and pinkfoot geese in winter. High quality path (walking, cycling, horse riding) around the loch from Kinross pier, north and eastwards by Kirkgate Park, Burleigh Sands and Findatie to the RSPB centre on the south shore. Plans afoot to extend the path and complete the off-road circuit of the loch. Several bird watching hides and cafes along the way. Car parking at Kinross Pier, Kirkgate, Burleigh, Findatie, RSPB Vane Farm.

Boat trips in summer to Castle Island (see description of the Castle) from Kirkgate Park jetty. Non-motorised water sports limited to avoid disturbance of the internationally important and sensitive wildlife.

Internationally renowned brown trout fishery.
