Opposite here was once the Oprichnina court of Ivan the Terrible, which he built himself in 1566 when he decided to leave the Kremlin to live beyond the Neglinka River on Vozdvyzhensky Str.

The building that we see was built in 1877 and originally only three floors. In 1902, the fourth floor was added by the architect V. V. Schaub. The hotel rented furnished rooms (Gorky lived here in 1905, L. V. Sobinov in the years 1913-1919). Gorky's room became a base for the revolutionary fighting bands who took part in the armed uprising of December 1905.
