fortification, motte-and-bailey castle, earthwork (archaeology)
This is a large 12th century earth ringwork and bailey fortress. Occupied until the 13th century, the low platform is encased by a wide ditch and supports the remains of a rampart that contains a drystone wall. To the west, is a square inner bailey and the south an outer bailey, both are outlined by low mounds, ramparts and ditches that were once wet.
