Between Idlywild Road and Redwood Estates is the famed Big Moody Curve, named after Moody Creek, over which the highway runs in this section. The highway makes a 90-, then a 180-, and finally another 90-degree turn, basically returning to the same heading prior to the turn. The curve is infamous due to its sharpness (especially in the 180-degree section, which is a good science lesson in centrifugal forces) and its grade. Accidents are frequent in this area, primarily caused by drivers traveling too fast for the conditions.
