Harmony Aikido was developed from Japanese aikido for use by the whole world. Harmony Aikido students range widely in age and background. Anyone can learn: weak or strong, old or young, big, small, even those with disabilities. Students practice Harmony Aikido for their self, health, strength, enjoyment, discipline, control, good manners, movement, technique, to gain excellent qualifications as students and instructors of aikido, and to learn true self-defense for modern day life. Training includes basic movements, falls and rolls, techniques practiced with a partner, and practice with wooden weapons.

Harmony Aikido was founded by Jang Eun Yu. Born in South Korea, Yu Sensei became a live-in student (uchi deshi) under Gozo Shioda Sensei, founder of Yoshinkan Aikido. Yu Sensei later became a resident instructor and helped develop the system used by Yoshinkan Aikido to train the Japanese police. He was selected by Shioda Sensei to go to England to teach Aikido. Yu Sensei received six months of special training and then spent 7 years introducing true aikido to Europe and establishing Yoshinkan Aikido in England. Among his prominent students is Anthony Yates Sensei, who became head of the British Yoshinkan Aikido Federation and is now head of Harmony Aikido in England. In 1985 Shioda Sensei asked Yu Sensei to move to California to continue teaching Aikido and to raise his family. He was aided by Kushida Sensei. After more than 36 years of teaching and training, Yu Sensei developed the Harmony Aikido style to focus on true self defense and control of attackers and to spread the teaching world wide.
