  • I made the mistake of booking in yesterday 23rd Sept. Tired after driving Mt Isa-Hughenden-Lynd I paid $120 for a room without checking first. I was given a list of things to note and told where NOT to Park and where NOT to walk with the threat of being savaged by their dogs. I went to the room allocated D1 and there was no electricity. Walking back up to the kiosk along the dog free route I was told to wait while a knowledgeable staff member was summonsed. She told me the door needed to be closed before any electricity was available. Then she proceeded to lecture me from the list of do,s and don't,s. I told her I already read them and she made some insolent remark. Obviously she had been trained either by the constabulary or by Jetstar. Ok. Now we have power in this tiny cubicle but I must keep moving so the sensor doesn't switch the electricity off. About 8pm no water. Up the dog free route again and told to wait and someone would come and talk to me. Finally a grandmotherly type told me to go back to the room and she would check. Down she came, verified there was no water and took a torch out the back. Some time later I was informed that there was a "busted pipe" and it would be fixed. It was fixed about an hour later. These are demountable rooms that Miners are PAID extra to stay in. The only redeeming factor was the room was clean. The downside was that they reeked of some noxious deodorant. Hospitality is not a word any of the staff there are familiar with. They all seem to have had charisma and personality bypasses. No excuses for remoteness as it is an easy 3 hour drive over sealed roads to the Atherton Tablelands then another hour to Cairns. I did not risk the food and drink.
