Midtown Community Elementary School

USA / New Jersey / Ocean Grove /

The Ridge Avenue School will be replaced with a new 3-story 145,200-square- foot building. It will house 700 students in pre-kindergarten through grade five, special education and handicapped children.

Midtown Community Elementary School will have 38 classrooms, an over-sized gymnasium and cafeteria, and a rooftop outdoor science laboratory designed in concert with staff from the Liberty Science Center. It will provide the community with various services and opportunities. There will be a district security center that will house the Embury Avenue police sub-station. The school will have an intergenerational tutoring center where seniors from the Senior Center will work with Neptune students. Another new service offered is a district wellness clinic, which will be staffed by residents from the Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC). This clinic will treat students with chronic health and dental problems.

The facility will be geo-thermally heated and air-conditioned and use the efficient and environmentally sound raised floor air plenum technology. The facility - as designed, will qualify for a “Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (L.E.E.D.) rating, making it one of only two schools in the entire U.S with this rating. The building itself will serve to demonstrate, through its design and construction, a curriculum developed to educate all elementary school students about the positive aspects of environmentally sustainable buildings. This facility will be a destination for intra-district field trips and provide special instruction, programmed activities, and learning experiences for all Neptune students.

The construction for the school began in January 2004 by the Turner Construction Company. SSP Architectural Group, Inc. is the design architect and Imperial Construction Group, Inc. is the Management Consulting Firm.
