Hapur (known earlier as Haripur) is a city and Nagar Palika Parishad in Hapur Block Hapur Tehsil in Hapur District of Uttar Pradesh. This is also the headquarters of, Hapur district.
Hapur is located at latitude of 28.45°N and a longitude of 77.45°E . It has an average elevation of 206 meteres (675 feet).Hapur is a city with a population of 216,100 located 65 kilometers east of the capital of India (Delhi). Two Northern Railway lines run through Hapur: one from Meerut, 35 kilometers to the north and another from New Delhi, 65 kilometers to the west.
Hapur is a historic town, declared as new / independent District on 28 Sep 2011, (Before that it was a part of Ghaziabad District ). It is famous for Hapar ‘Papar/Papad’ (a large wafer) and is a leading market for grain and jaggery in the district. Hapur is located 64 km east of Delhi and is about 34 km from the district Ghaziabad.
Hapur was founded by Haradatta, the Dor chieftain of Bulandshahr and Meerut, in 983. The town was then christened after him. Another version is that the town derives its name after the word ‘hapar’, which signifies an 'orchard.'
Nearest international airport is at New Delhi. Hapur is a railway junction where the Delhi-Moradabad and the Meerut-Khurja lines of the Northern Railways meet. National Highway No 9 passes south of Hapur.
Hapur is said to have been founded in the 10th century. It was granted by Daulat Scindia to his French general Perron at the end of the 18th century. The city was originally named 'Haripur', which means a sacred place of God where God and Goddess suppose to live. On 28 Sep 2011 , it was declared as New Distt. Of U.P., by C.M. Mayawati.
In the movement of freedom fight numbers of common people were involved from every level of society. Vaishy community provided their money and blood as well .
Hapur is very well known for its contribution in freedom struggle and there is a fare organised every year in remembrance of the martyr of freedom struggle locally known as Shaheed Mela. There is a Smarak also at Attarpura Chowpla in honour of the same. East path goes to holy place Brijghat (Garmukteshwar). It is one of the famous holy place for pilgrims.The river Ganga is located near Hapur. It is called Gangaji by believers of Hindu mythology.
