The restored Sentry Box was built in 1786 by Revolutionary War Gen. George Weedon.

The Sentry Box, dating from 1786, is owned by Fredericksburg businessman Charles G. McDaniel Sr. The Georgian-style home on lower Caroline Street has connections to Revolutionary War luminaries, and the Civil War. Brig. Gen George Weedon of the Continental Army, and later mayor of Fredericksburg, built the house and named it to reflect his military career. The Sentry Box was in a precarious position during the Civil War. In December 1862, the Union Army built a pontoon crossing just below the house, where there was intense combat.

McDaniel, who is an indirect relation to Weedon, and his wife, Mary Wynn, have lived in the house for 45 years. It's listed on state and national historic registers.

  • This is the a great site! I have been to Fredricksburg several times. I've been through many of histories buildings in Fredricksburg. My brother, George W. Bennett lived west of town. His daughter Janette and her husband Mike Evans live south of Spotsylvania. I must return to Fredricksburg while I still can. I had a most wonderful dining experience at the Chimneys restaurant maybe 20 yrs. ago. Wow! What history in your town. dbennett51@Cox.net
