Formed in 1746 as a very large county. Its range stretched west to modern Orange County. Its county seat is Smithfield.

The main axes of development in the county were a series of mill towns on two railroad corridors, along the current highway corridors of US 70 and US 301. The county is a crossroads where I-40 and I-95, two of the busiest highways in the state cross near Benson in the western part of the county. The northwest corner of the county is becoming a bedroom community to Raleigh, as sprawl from Raleigh moves out of Wake County.
