Notes: Located within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The structure stands 142 feet tall and overlooks the remains of what was once Assateague Village. The lighthouse is still in use today by the Coast Guard.

Comments

  • I was part of the renovation team in 1993. A team made up of members of the USCG ANT Chincoteague and USCGC Red Oak. The roof was replaced on the Oil Shack and the windows of the tower were protected with plexi-glass. We used cable hung platforms (window washer decks) to scrape, and paint the entire tower and under the cat walk. Assateague Light is a wonderfull example of Civil War era engineering.
  • I remember those renovations as a kid, it seemed like after that the kerosene odor vanished from the base of the tower.
