The Kent State University Precision Flying Team competes in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's Region III. Two of the many events that the schools compete in are Power-Off and Short Field landings. The competitors are judged by how close they can land to a line painted on the runway as well as many other things. There are 3 main lines placed on the runway: the aim line, a fowl line which is 100' short of the aim line and the fowl line which is 200' past the aim line. These 3 lines are referred to as "The Box". Pilots are considered landing "out of the box" if they fail to land between the short and far fowl lines without bouncing beyond or having a wheel unexpectedly come off the ground after rolling beyond the box.

Here are the rules for the Power Off Landing Event:

A few months prior to the Region III competition held at one of the school's airports the Kent State team (like other school's) use flour to temporarily place a practice box on the runway so they can practice their landings. Because the lines used to mark the box are not official FAA runway markings it is necessary to make them temporary which is why flour is used. As soon as it rains the flour is washed away leaving no permanent marks.
