Formed in 1779, containing modern Warren and part of Vance counties. Its county seat is Warrenton.

The north part of the county, due to the railroads and I 85 and US 158 highway corridors, is sustained by mills. The mills have been dwindling over the past few decades. Recreation on Lake Gaston has become more important to the economy. The rest of the county is agrarian.
