Formed in 1746, from modern Granville, Franklin and parts of Orange and Vance counties. Its county seat is Oxford.

This largely agrarian county has a few mill towns along the I 85 corridor. Since World War II, the southwest corner of the county has been dominated by the government built and owned facilities in the Camp Butner area, including military training facilities, psychiatric hospitals and prisons.
