This seminary, operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, trains young men to become priests from many dioceses. It boasts nationally renowned programs in theology and philosophy, and is one of the few American institutions accredited to offer pontifical degrees (STB's, etc.)

The seminary combines a collegiate seminary, located in the lower (south) building, where students major in philosophy in a program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Candidates for orders reside in the upper (north) building, where the program of studies culminates in either the Master of Divinity degree, the pontifical Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree, or both.

Seminarians studying for the priesthood may expect to spend six years at St. Charles. The first two years are spent at the lower college, where the academic formation focuses on spirituality and philosophy. (These years may be waived if the seminarian has prior academic formation in philosophy.) The remaining four years are spent at the upper college, where the academic focus shifts to theology.
