The district gets it's name from a road that runs through it. This road goes from the center of Kharkiv to Staryi (Old) Saltiv, the road is called Saltiv highway.

Before the 1960s Saltivka was called the "Saltiv settlement", and included a few small neighborhoods of low-rise (up to three stories) residential buildings.

There are almost no industrial establishments in Saltivka, but it has plenty of stores and markets; one of them is Barabashove - one of the largest in Ukraine wares market. It is located by the Akademika Barabashova metro station, and locals simply call it "Barabashka" or "Baraban".
