Jawatha Mosque

Saudi Arabia / as-Sarqiyah / al-Hhulaylah /
place with historical importance, mosque, UNESCO World Heritage Site, tourist attraction

The original mosque was built in 7 AH (c. 629 AD) by the Bani Abd al-Qays tribe who lived there before and early in the Islamic period.

It is believed to be the first mosque built in Eastern Province and is where the second Friday congregation prayer in Islam was offered, the first being held at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. According to legend, when the Hajr Al Aswad (the Black Stone of the Kaaba), was stolen from Mecca by the Qarmatians, it was kept in this mosque for nearly 22 years.

The mosque has been restored by the Saudi government as part of the National Program for Caring for Ancient Mosques, launched by the Heritage Foundation under the supervision of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowment, Call and Guidance. Restoration was completed in 2015.
