The owners of the land, Edwin Janss and Harold Janss, who controlled some 200 acres of the proposed University of California Southern Branch site, and Alphonzo Bell, owner of the rest of the 383-acre tract, offered to sell the land for one million dollars, although it's value for subdivision purposes was probably several times this amount. The Janss brothers, in effect, made a gift on the order of three million dollars.
The famous university steps featured in movies, including the Nutty Professor. Named after real estate developers Edwin and Harold Janss who sold the State of California the land UCLA is built on.
