The first oil well was drilled by Shell in 1910 (the Grand Old Lady), and is now a state monument and one of Miri's tourist attractions.

Miri opened a Petroleum Museum to preserve the city's roots as an oil and gas city. The museum is situated on a hill with a view of Miri and the coast. The Grand Old Lady, Miri's first producing rig is situated at the museum.
