The sea fortress of Suomenlinna ("Fort Finland", also known as Sveaborg in Swedish and traditionally in Finnish Viapori) was built in the mid-18th Century to protect Sweden's national interests against Russian expansionism.
No longer very practical as a military base, Suomenlinna was turned over to civilian administration in 1973 and has served as a unique residential area and tourist attraction ever since.
Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
