Chester, Illinois is the home of Popeye the Sailor man. Well, the birthplace of Elzie Segar. Annually, the first weekend in September is the Popeye picnic. A festival devoted entirely toward Popeye. Located about an hour south of St. Louis, it makes travel here quite simple.
Also, several films have been shot here including, The Fugitive (1993), In the Heat of the Night (1963), and several others. Chester is also home to Kaskaskia, the first capital of Illinois. As well as the Peirre Menard home.
