The town is an important watering hole for sailing ships that plies the water from the west, Jakarta to the east Surabay and beyond, the north from Samarinda in Borneo. It has a sizeable shipyard and steel manufacturing developed in the last 300 years. The town country side in the south has the famous tomb Sunan Tegalwangi, once noted in a map drawn by V.O.C (East India Company of The Netherlands). In the town proper, a large Chinese Taoist temple, Zhe Hai Gong (Tek Hai Kiong - Fujianese name), holds celebrations almost every year since its being built on the 14th-15th of the first month of Chinese Lunar Year. It had a large Chinese school, Tiong Hua Hui Koan (THHK), built in 1906 and closed down by the government in 1969. The alumni held a 100 year celebration recently in 2006. About 100 came from all over the world, China (including Hong Kong) - Canada - Australia, in addition to the alumni residing in Indonesia.
