 airport, airpark

Formerly the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, used by the U.S. Navy to assemble, test, refit and retrofit jets built by the Grumman Corporation on Long Island.

This older aerial photo shows both runways marked with X's which indicate they are closed, but more recent photos, such as that at Live Search Maps ( maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=40.922724~-72.792685&... ) show runway 14/32 with the X's removed and that runway is operational according to the airport rules and regulations posted on the Town of Riverhead website ( www.riverheadli.com/rthome.html ).

CCC VOR in use.

  • This is the old Northrop Gruman airport where for years they made planes such as the F-14 Tomcat. Now it's home to a private sky diving company and a PODS dealer (Portable On Demand Storage - metal containers you can rent, they'll transport it to your house.) South of here is a backroad, where you can cut out the 45-50 mph traffic on 25A to Tanger outlet centers, and cruise at 80-100mph if you care to.
  • Future home of a 10 story indoor ski mountain and mad made water skiing lake... Much better uses for the property!
