The Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir were completed in 2003 to provide a water supply for San Diego County in the event of a severe water shortage. The dam does not block a river or stream, but rather seals off the open end of a canyon. Most of the water filling the reservoir is imported from hundreds of miles away.
