This village was built by the Rai Jats of Thalla, Jalandhar, who moved to lands in Khusropur, Jalandhar for services rendered to Maharaja Ranjit Singh in annexing Jalandhar to his kingdom in 1811. The British East India Company on annexation of the Jalandhar Doab in 1846 remembered the Rai's. As they had given support to the Sikh Raj during Sher Singh's reign in providing lands in Thalla for the Sikh armed forces to camp, and in helping them to cross the Satluj river to attack British protected principalities between 1840-1843. The Rai's also led attacks on the British in the First Anglo Sikh War in 1845 on the side of Maharaja Duleep Singh's forces. The British therefore built their cantonment on top of the Rai's lands and dwellings in Khusropur, out of spite, and forcibly evicted them directing them to go to barren marshland as ill compensation between Garhshankar, Banga and Mahilpur. They moved to this land and between 1846-1850 constructed a village. They dug out the marshland and replaced it with proper earth and made access roads, housing and sanitation. The land had many Peacocks so they named the village Moranwali 'land of the Peacocks'. The village was completed in 1850 and other Jat clans, such as the Gills, the Sandhus and the Hayers joined the Rai's to live in the village.
