History

In 1866, the Civil War had just ended, and it was time to rebuild a nation. In this turbulent year, two newly arrived German immigrants, brothers Charles F. and William Huttig, founded a sawmill and lumberyard in Muscatine, Iowa. This enterprise evolved into Huttig Brothers Manufacturing, focusing on sash and door manufacturing as its primary business. With a hard-won reputation for work of excellent quality and unquestioned integrity, the company prospered.

In 1885, the company opened a branch in St. Louis to serve as a distribution center. Seven years later, this operation became an independent business, Huttig Sash & Door Company.

Huttig has been growing for more than one hundred and twenty years through a commitment to outstanding customer service, highest quality products, dedicated and knowledgeable employees, and sound management. We have the resources to continue growing, and we’re among the largest domestic distributors of building products in the US.

We know that size and a solid tradition are not guarantees of success in the future. While we are proud of our nineteenth-century roots, we are a progressive company firmly focused on the future. We embrace an enlightened management philosophy that values operational excellence, unparalleled service and investment in our employees.
