In 1958, IBM leased what was the only building on the site (963) from the Greater Burlington Industrial Council and started manufacturing electrical relays. The company eventually purchased the site and started expanding. At one time, more than 9,000 people worked here; at present, the workforce is roughly 5,000.

IBM still owns the place and occupies most of it (the big 200mm wafer semiconductor fab, design center and test center), but is now leasing unused space to other companies (General Dynamics' Tech Center and ASK, a manufacturer of RFID tagging products)) and is still the largest employer in the state of Vermont.

IBM employees here are proud of their "Triple Crown" of game platform development: MicroSoft XBox, Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation processors were all developed here.
