National Life of Vermont began business in 1850, growing to become the largest domestic employer in Vermont, occupying this entire hilltop complex.

The company is still here and still owns and manages the property, but with downsizing, doesn't need quite as much space for itself: a considerable portion of the facility's office space is leased to such as the State of Vermont.
