A beautiful lodge on Mt. Hood, in the Cascade Range. Timberline Lodge was built by the WPA in 1936-38. A few exterior shots of the lodge were used in the Stanley Kubrick classic horror film, The Shining. Most of the hotel (The Overlook Hotel) featured in the film was recreated on the back lot of Elstree Studios in the UK, as Stanley Kubrick did not like to leave the country.

The large fireplace at Timberline Lodge has been used since the 1980s by Oregon Public Broadcasting as the source of footage for its Christmas Eve music television program "Yule Log", a local version of the original WPIX classic. The program that currently airs was recorded in 2002.

  • The only "filming" done at this location, were a couple of shots of the exterior of the Lodge. The hedge maze was never here. None of the interior shots neither. I have been to Timberline Lodge (many times and I have seen the movie many times. The scenic drive up to the lodge, in the movie, was not done here either.
