June 3, 1962. Air France 707 "Chateau de Sully" (F-BHSM) crashed after an aborted takeoff from Runway 08 at Orly Field. Takeoff proceeded normally until the aircraft reached Vr speed. Aircraft would not rotate into takeoff attitude due to a failure of the elevator trim tab. Flight crew attempted to abort takeoff with approximately 1/3 of the runway remaining. Tires failed due to excessive braking, leading to landing gear failure as aircraft left end of the runway. Number 2 engine broke loose and ignited a fire as the aircraft collided with runway lighting fixtures, fences, buildings and other objects. Of 132 passengers and crewmembers aboard there were only 2 survivors.

The flight was a charter carrying members of the Atlanta, Georgia (USA) Art Society. The group had been touring the major art museums of Europe in anticipation of constructing a much larger fine arts facility in their own city. The Woodruff Memorial Arts Center in Atlanta was dedicated in 1968 to their honor & memory.
