city, county seat
City with a population of 121,015. County seat of Cumberland County. Originally populated by Siouan native peoples like the Eno and Waccamaw, the area was settled by Scots in the mid-18th century.
Two towns, Cross Creek and Campbellton, were settled here, the latter named after Campbellton, Scotland. The towns were united and renamed after the Revolutionary War to honor General Lafayette, the French military hero who fought on the side of the Americans during the Revolutionary War.
It served as the capital of the state from 1789 until 1794 when the capital was moved to Raleigh. The University of Chapel Hill was officially chartered at a meeting here.
Much of the city was destroyed in a fire in 1831 but quickly rebuilt. Union troops under General Sherman occupied and burned much of the town in 1865. The establishment of nearby Fort Bragg expanded the city considerably during the 20th century.
Fayetteville currently has a higher crime rate than the national average, and is one of the few places in the South to be affected by Bloods/Crips gang violence.
The randomness of violent crime in Fayetteville is evidenced by the murder of Michael Jordan's father, who was killed by two local thugs when his car broke down.
It is derisively referred to as "Fayettenam" by military families who have had to live either here or near here at Fort Bragg/Pope AFB.
