The town of Johnnie (originally known as Montgomery) was founded in 1891 by George Montgomery, who was looking for the Lost Breyfogle. The Johnnie and Congress mines were the most active in the area, although only the Congress was operational by 1895. Sporadic discoveries from the 1890s through the '20s spurred weak interest in the area until the post office officially closed in 1935. The property was purchased after WWII and is now private property.
