The ground was named as 'Sanath Jayasuriya Ground' as a tributr to Sri Lanka's veteran cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya. (This may be the first of it's kind, which was named in a living person's name). This is the ground provided to his Alma Matar St. Servatus College, Matara, where Mr. Jayasuriya started his cricketing career.
