NAB Terminal Island (site) (Los Angeles, California)

USA / California / Lomita / Los Angeles, California
airport, Second World War 1939-1945, military, place with historical importance, historical layer / disappeared object, United States Navy

First established in 1927 as Allen Field, it was located adjacent to Long Beach Naval Shipyard. The Navy also established a training center the same year there. The field had a 2,000' northeast-southwest oiled clay runway and 200' seaplane launch way. The Navy took complete control of the field in 1935 and redesignated it Reeves Field. In 1942, it was redesignated again as NAB Terminal Island. Planes commonly found here were P-38 Lightnings and PBY Catalinas. During the war years, it was used to support aircraft assigned to ships of the Pacific Fleet. It also tested aircraft from the nearby Lockheed, Vultee, and Douglas factories.

The field was disestablished after the war in 1947, although the field itself continued to operate in a reduced capacity. In later years, it hosted the Long Beach Sports Car Race and Brotherhood Raceway Park. The former field was given to the city of Los Angeles in 1971. It is now part of an industrial facility, and no trace of it remains.
