The Los Angeles Theatre is a 2,000 seat auditorium in the historic Broadway theater district in Downtown Los Angeles. It is used for film screenings as well as live performances. The theater was built by H.L. Gumbiner in 1931 to replicate the Palace of Versailles. Construction only lasted 90 days and cost $1.5 million. Charlie Chaplin funded the completion so that the theater opened to a premier of his film City Lights. Attendance was strong initially and during World War II as many factory workers would see shows before and after their shifts. With the postwar suburbanization of Los Angeles, attendance began to fall. Today the theater no longer screens movies regularly, but is used for special screenings and events. It is also used as a location for filming and has been featured in New York, New York, Man on the Moon and Charlie's Angels 1 & 2.

The Theater's façade and marquee design was used as the inspiration for that of the Hyperion Theater at Disney’s California Adventure, currently showcasing Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular.

  • The premiere of Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights" was held here. This was the most luxurious movie palace built by S. Charles Lee. He spent $1.2 million dollars on this palace (a princely sum back then.) Sometimes, in cheaper films, when you see a character in a European palace, it's being filmed in this theater lobby. It was built with a special circus tent-like room for children to play in while their parents watched the movie. It also has a special mechanism so that the movie could be remotely viewed while standing in the smoking lounge downstairs.
  • The prototype for La Gamaar, (cinema in the film "inglorious bastards" Quentin Tarantino), served as a two buildings - a Cinema Vista in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Theatre at 615 S Broadway. here you see this >> http://ru.digititles.com/content/po-sledam-besslavnykh-ublyudkov-kinoturizm
