Elko Tract is a 2,220 acre (9 km²) tract of land in Henrico County, Virginia. It is considered one of Virginia's most well known ghost towns due to its history as a decoy airfield during World War II and suspicious activity in the area afterwards.
Created in 1944 as a decoy to protect Byrd Army Airfield to the northwest. Three fake runways were created and equipped with lights in an effort to confuse any incoming German bombers into mistaking the Elko Tract for the actual air field. Obviously, no German bomber ever made it to the US, much less Richmond.
