City with a population of 9,485 in 2007. Originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans, the land was purchased by the council of West Jersey proprietors in 1676. Its name was derived from that of Bridlington, England. It served as the colonial capital of West Jersey from 1673 until 1702. Quakers established themselves here in 1673. From 1702 until 1784 it served as a co-capital of New Jersey, during both the colonial and independent periods. Given a royal charter in 1733, it was incorporated as a city in 1784. The Burlington Coat Factory was founded here in 1924.
