 region, nuclear reprocessing site

A nuclear processing facility built in 1950-53, at the height of the Cold War. It was chosen as the site for a plutonium production facility in the 1950s and several towns within its boundaries were seized under eminent domain and relocated. The highly-enriched uranium and plutonium produced here was used in making nuclear weapons. None of the on-site reactors are currently operational and the site is mainly used for clean-up related to the past production of nuclear weapons.
