Saivite poets Appar, Sambandhar and Sundarar have sung in praise of the Lord here (Site Number 125 of Chola dynasties temples of the south shore of Cauvery river). According to the Indian and Tamil Nadu archeological and epigraphical records the temple may have been consecrated by Chola King Aditya I (871-907 CE), son of Vijayala Chola. There are epigraphical records from Parantaka Chola I (907-955 CE), son of Aditya I in addition to later kings.
