The Depot District is Lubbock's #1 spot for nightlife, culture, shopping, and more. Its cornerstone, the former Ft. Worth & Denver South Plains Railway Depot (now The Buddy Holly Center), was constructed in 1928 in a Spanish renaissance revival style. This depot provided Lubbock with a second rail connection and an expanded trade area when completed. The building was abandoned by the railway in 1953, but as a city adaptive use project in 1976 it was restored to become Lubbock's first historical landmark. The City of Lubbock purchased the original Depot in 1997 for $600,000 to be a fine arts center and house the Buddy Holly Collection.
