Marquis Hall was constructed in two phases from the Spring of 1962 through 1964. The building was designed by campus architects Izumi, Arnott, and Sugiyama.
The Hall was constructed as a food services building seating 1200 and was intended for use by both students in residence and general eating. It is connected to the Qu’Appelle Hall Residence Addition to the south, which was constructed from 1962 to 1963, and to the Place Riel Student Centre to the southwest. Place Riel was completed in 1980.
The architects originally favoured a design by which Marquis would have been connected to the north end of the original section of Qu’Appelle Hall by way of a small connecting passageway. An underground connection would then have been built between the north ends of Qu’Appelle Hall and Saskatchewan Hall, allowing easy access to food services for all students living in residence. This layout was abandoned in favour of the present design.
The first phase of construction on the building was completed in 1962 by the Piggott Construction Company for $127,209. The second phase of construction was executed by Poole Construction from 1963 to 1964. The second phase of building cost $1,297,357.
Marquis Hall was renovated during the late 1970's to complement the Place Riel Student Centre Project. The Campus Bookstore was relocated to Marquis Hall as part of the renovations sometime after the completion of the Place Riel building in 1980.
In 1980 fire exits were installed in the building for $210,690. Ramps were added in 1981 for $101,100. Both projects were constructed by Cana Construction and designed by the architectural firm of Ferguson Folstad.
In 1990 the Canada Employment Centre was installed for $548,360. The Centre was designed by the architectural firm of Akin Olfert, and was built by R & D Construction.
