Gordie Howl Bowl was opened in 1960, built on land repossessed by the city in 1931 for unpaid taxes. Its natural grass field earned a reputation for becoming a muddy, crater-ridden quagmire that would freeze in place during the late autumn. The grass will be replaced by artificial turf in 2014, as part of a $2.4 million upgrading of the facility. It will also include new lighting, score clock and sound system.
