Carmarthen=Caerfyrddin (Original Welsh name meaning Merlin's fort). Know as the 'Gateway to West Wales' Settled by the Romans, subsequently by the Normans and now the Tescoextras. Carmarthen's status was officially recognised by Henry VIII's Royal Charter of 1542. The Town thrived as a working port and a natural trading point as the lowest fordable point of the River Towy(Tywi). The port declined from the turn of the last century due to bigger ships and an increasingly silted river. Trade continued with a large farmers livestock market and a varied provisions one. Current home of the Carmarthen Quins & Athletic(Rugby)and Carmarthen Town(soccer)teams.

Thank you - That was rather interesting. What are the Tescoextras?

I think the Tescoextras is a humorous reference to Tesco supermarkets who seem to have the council "in their pocket" according to local papers. Having built a new store on the site of a medieval monastery around 10 years ago (against much local opposition) they've now decided that they want a new bigger, better store elsewhere. The council have apparently agreed to this...
